Personal Assistants

North Tipperary Disability Support Service provides a Personal Assistant service for persons with disabilities across North Tipperary. North Tipperary Disability Support Service provides a Personal Assistant service for persons with disabilities across North Tipperary.

After being referred to NTDSS, every prospective new Service User meets with our service supervisor to explain exactly what their needs are, and exactly what kind of assistance would be most relevant to them.

If NTDSS is then able to find a Personal Assistant who would be a good fit, our team will then work with the new Service User and their Personal Assistant to draw up a detailed service plan.
At all stages, it is vital that any service is led by the Service User. It is the role of NTDSS to understand the needs of its Service Users and to help them achieve a better quality of life and a greater degree of independence.

The Philosophy of Independent Living

Independent Living asserts the right of all persons regardless of age, type or extent of disability to live in the community…with all the duties and privileges that this entails.

The essence of Independent Living is the freedom to make decisions about your own life and to participate fully in your community

John Evans

Independent Living Conference

London, 1989

The cornerstone of Independent Living Philosophy is control and choice. Systems advoacy is of ultimate importance because some choices for disabled people still need to be created.
